Google has unveiled the biggest change to Search in over 25 years—and it is powered by AI.

The latest news for the tech giant was announced recently regarding a transformation to the traditional Search box, which many notice now contains options to utilize AI to enhance your search experience.

There have been mixed reactions to this development, and many Google users have decided to switch to different search engines that allow you to opt out of using AI. DuckDuckGo reported an over 30% increase in app installs following the launch of Google’s AI-powered Search box, chosen for its commitment to privacy and allowing users to have choice in how much AI they are using.

This leads to discussion surrounding Google’s decision to implement more AI into Search. While some praise the possibilities for more personalized search experiences and further convenience, others are concerned about accuracy and the impact on web traffic.

In this article, we will explore the new features of Google’s AI-powered Search tools as well as discuss potential technological and cognitive impacts of this new advancement.

Launching an Intelligent Search Box

Google’s latest successes include reaching over one billion monthly users of their AI Mode and queries almost doubling every quarter since its launch. Now, the company has merged the power of search and AI with its Gemini 3.5 Flash model in a revamped AI Mode.

The new intelligent Search box for standard searching is designed to anticipate the intent of the user, forming AI-powered suggestions as you begin to type your query. In addition, you can input images, videos, files, or even your Chrome tabs as inputs. A range of results will appear as they usually do, but AI Overview has received a new upgrade as well. Now, you can continue the conversation with Gemini and ask follow-up questions through AI Overview, just as you would in any other chatbot program.

Soon, Google will also be introducing its new Search agents, which will be able to operate in the background at all hours of the day. The user will be able to customize multiple agents in Search that can analyze various inputs of information to pinpoint exactly what the user is looking for. When it comes to a specific question, these agents will also be able to continue looking across the web for any new information, such as that from news articles or social media posts.

Responsible AI Considerations

As we have stated in previous blog articles, responsibility in AI is a critical factor that should remain a focus throughout development, deployment, and usage of AI tools and systems. With the new AI updates to Google’s Search, there are important things to consider.

One is that AI can make mistakes, and it is always necessary to double check important information when conversing with the new AI Overview chatbot feature. The second is that AI Overview is known for producing outputs sometimes that are not relevant or that are inaccurate. This can cause issues for children or elderly who may not understand fully what the output should be. For instance, AI has difficulty with spelling, due to how it processes words – by chunk, rather than by letter. Recently, AI Overview was asked how many letter e’s were in the word “astronomical,” to which it responded that there were two. Another example is when users would type the word “disregard,” expecting to receive a definition. Instead, the AI took it as the user asking it to disregard the last search. Now, AI Overview does not show up when searching the word.

AI tools like these can be powerful drivers of growth and innovation, however understanding their limitations and imperfections is crucial when it comes to utilizing them responsibly.

Potential Impact of an AI-Powered Search

There are a variety of ways that Google’s new AI-powered Search may impact the internet, how we research, how we surf the web, and even how we think.

Technologically, these new updates will improve efficiency and convenience for billions of users, allowing quicker access to information from across the web. With the new AI agents, users do not have to worry about missing a specific product drop – the agent will be able to monitor that for you. Agents will also have the capability to book services for you or make reservations on your behalf. This could be especially useful for those that are not as skilled with technology as others, improving accessibility for the internet.

On the other hand, if more users are conversing with AI Overview’s chatbot to seek out information, or AI agents provide local news as soon as it appears, that will mean less traffic for websites. Having AI in Search able to find information quickly and in one place could mean that more and more users are choosing not to visit the actual sites where the information comes from. Businesses across industries rely on traffic from Google Search to find new customers, and these new AI features have the potential to impact that.

Cognitively, having these new AI Search agents find information and conduct processes for the user can certainly reduce the stress of visiting multiple sources, searching through different stores or restaurants, comparing and reading reviews. However, it is important to be aware of the possible overreliance on these AI features.

Cognitive effort and critical thinking is necessary for a healthy mind, and putting too much of that on AI has the potential for a negative impact. With the new upgrades to Google Search, the user has the option to do much less thinking on their part, and instead put it all on the agents. When interacting with these AI tools, these considerations are crucial to keep in mind for responsible AI use.

Google’s new AI Search has great potential for efficiency and convenience. As with any AI tool or feature, responsible use remains an important factor when interacting with the upgraded Search and the soon-to-be-unveiled agents that will take surfing the web to a whole new level.
