Introducing AI Robots to Enhance Accessibility
Sidewalks and other walkways in cities require ongoing maintenance to ensure a smooth experience for everyone who uses them, especially those with disabilities and the elderly. In an effort to improve sidewalk conditions and to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), cities are leveraging robotic technology in order to assess the condition of these walking paths throughout their communities.

Uses of AI Robots in U.S. Cities
Tyler, Texas
Tyler is one of the cities in the U.S. that has moved forward with utilizing robot technology to improve sidewalk conditions. They began their project on June 10 to collect efficient information on pedestrian walkways throughout the city.
Officials from Tyler had confirmed that the robots were used only to gather information on infrastructure and did not store personal information. It is also reported that they are built to prioritize human safety and to yield to people walking by, ensuring they can conduct their assessments in a safe and responsible manner.
The city performed data collection on 94.5 miles of sidewalks and trails and associated curb ramps, 122 signalized intersections and 59 transit stops, reducing the time it would take to utilize traditional methods of assessment. This initiative paints a clearer picture of pedestrian pathway conditions across the city of Tyler, enabling a more proactive approach to future safety and accessibility management planning.
Hoboken, New Jersey
The city of Hoboken, New Jersey has also integrated AI-powered robot technology in July to assess sidewalks and other pedestrian infrastructure. For a month, these robots will collect data to support the city’s new Accessibility Action Plan.
The Daxbot robots utilize sensors to collect detailed engineering measurements, including sidewalk width, cross slope, running slope, vertical changes, curb ramp conditions, and other important features for ADA accessibility. They are consistently monitored and prioritize pedestrian safety.
In addition to deploying these robots, Hoboken released a public accessibility survey in order to gather feedback from its residents and businesses to help shape specific priorities for future accessibility improvement initiatives. City officials seek to combine innovative technology with feedback from real residents to understand where improvements are needed to make safer and welcoming public spaces for everyone.
Potential Challenges Introduced by Physical AI in Cities
Crowded Sidewalks
Many sidewalks in different cities do not have the necessary space to accommodate robotic technology that travels across the pathways. With trees and bushes, the occasional dining setup outside a local restaurant, and the general heavy foot and bike traffic, there are concerns about adding another element to the mix that might make sidewalks overcrowded.
Blocked Paths
Earlier this year, the city of Chicago had banned robots that were created to deliver food and other packages to residents. Reports had stated that the robots failed to yield to pedestrians and blocked pathways, creating a larger accessibility issue, especially for those with disabilities. Technology like physical AI must come with vigorous testing and monitoring, because while they can assist with improving accessibility in cities, they also have the potential to cause further challenges for people walking on the sidewalk.
